Research and Planning: Model shots for music magazine

Today I took the shot I may use on my magazine and on the double page spread I have also picked a theme for the magazine.

The magazine theme will be the hottest DJ of winter 2010 and the weather fits accordingly.

These are just some of the images I have taken and all of them in my magazine at some point.

Research and Planning: Content page draft

This is a draft on my music magazine content page

Research and Planning: Location recces

This is the area i took my test shots, I used this area because it was a large area are there was no major danger around.

The things i had to take into account as a danger was the step going up onto the band stand as it was wet and there was a possibility of slipping and damaging the model or the equipment. the other danger was the wet leaves on the floor that were very slippy and could make someone slip.

Research and Planning: Insperation for text layout

I have taken interest in this magazine because of the text direction and layout which makes the magazine look more interesting and more eye catching.

I also like the way the text is around the image of the artist so only small parts of the artist are covered and you can still see the text.

Research and Planning: Week Plan

This week I plan on starting my music magazine and starting to get the final model shots so i can finish the first major draft of the music magazine.

I also plan to collect more information on the music magazine that are already on the market for more inspiration.

Research and Planning: Head shots

These are the head test shots for my magazine, I took into consideration lighting and zoom when I was taking my images. I think when I take the images with the real models I will use a different location and use more things that relate to the genre of my magazine.

Research and Planning: Music logos for magazine

These are the already existing logos that will feature in my music magazine.

I have chosen Napster because it is a well know music seller and they always feature in other music magazines.

Clubland will feature in my magazine because it is the biggest dance music logo in the world and is automatically connected to all kinds of dance music.

The Ministry of sound logo will be placed on my front cover as I plan to say the magazine is a brand of Ministry of Sound and that they have paid for the magazine to be made. In doing this I can also link the colour scheme from the Ministry of Sound to the magazine as they use dark blues black and yellow on all of there CD covers.

Research and Planning: Questionnaire results

Research and Planning: Drafts of music magazine

This is the first draft of my college magazine. I have designed it so I could feature a large image and also some sub stories on the cover so it looks as realistic as possible
.

  • I have chosen to place my masthead here because its is at the top of the page and is meant to be the first thing you see when you look at the magazine front cover.

This is a conventional place to put the masthead as other magazines place it in the same place.

I have placed the image of the artist here because I wanted it to take up the most space on the page and it will be easier to move my subtitle and text boxes to fit around the image.

The sub-story boxes are positioned here because they fit around the image of the artist and take up the space that left after placing the image.

Research and planning: Content page analysis

This is an example of a music magazine content page. it has all the conventions of a content page :

The colour scheme is consistent and interesting making it it easier to follow and easy to see.

The images fit in with the magazine and relate to what in featured in the magazine

The content page has information on it that is important to the magazine under the page headlines so it gives you a better idea of what the pages are featuring in this weeks edition.

The only thing I don't like is the basic use of font on the page

I like this content page because it has many different images and an interesting layout.

Research and planning: Podcast

Research and Planning: Possible mastheads

These are the possible masthead fonts I will use for my music magazine.

I have narrowed it down to these five fonts as they seem to relate to the genre of my magazine.

I have chosen these font style because they are visually effective and fit in with the genre of my music magazine.

The font at the top of the page is the least dramatic and is very simple, but the design of the font it interesting and very bold.

The second font on the list is the most visually dynamic as it actually ties in with music, as the vibration illustration as if it was surging through the letter.

The third font on the list is very simple but is eye catching at the same time because of the switch between upper and lower case lettering. The font width also changes making it look bolder and wider in some places then others.

The fourth font on the page looks like it has been spray painted onto a piece of paper. The fonts seem to bleed into each other making the letters connect. This is a good connection to music as most music producers use a spray paint style to make a logo or brand.

The last font on the page doesn't connect to music very well but the style of the font makes it interesting to look at. The crack effect covering the font makes it look like someone has smashed the font up.

After looking at these font I have established that these fonts could be used for different genres of music for example, indie, dance and rock.

Research and Planning: Double page spread analysis

This is a double page spread from the music magazine "Q" music magazine.

The page on the left is just and image of two of the band members
and the page on the right page there is an image of the other band member and the the text is under it.

This is a double page spread from the music magazine "Q" music magazine and it features the indie band "Friendly Fires".

I think that "Friendly Fires target audience is both males and females aged between 16-35 years old as the band may have music that all these ages will listen too.

The band represent them selves as an indie band in the way that they dress and there appearance. You can see the genre of music is indie rock because of the way they are dressed, they are dressed very casual. You can also tell see that they are an indie band by the way their hair is styles and the way they have a stereotypical look of a student to make themselves seem more like their audiences.

The page on the left is just an image of two of the band members and the page on the right page there is an image of the other band member and the text is under it. This could mean that the band member on the right, might be the lead singer and shows he is the most important as he is one his own on the other side of the page.

The story on the pages starts with telling the reader what the band has been nominated for and how they have achieved this. The article describes them as having a "Beatles moment" making the band seem more important and iconic to its audiences. The article also says the bands music has a colourful mix of "disco, punk funk, minimal techno and samba rhythms." This gives the reader the full genre of the band and what musical properties they use.
