Research and Planning: Model shots for music magazine

Today I took the shot I may use on my magazine and on the double page spread I have also picked a theme for the magazine.

The magazine theme will be the hottest DJ of winter 2010 and the weather fits accordingly.

These are just some of the images I have taken and all of them in my magazine at some point.

Research and Planning: Content page draft

This is a draft on my music magazine content page

Research and Planning: Location recces

This is the area i took my test shots, I used this area because it was a large area are there was no major danger around.

The things i had to take into account as a danger was the step going up onto the band stand as it was wet and there was a possibility of slipping and damaging the model or the equipment. the other danger was the wet leaves on the floor that were very slippy and could make someone slip.

Research and Planning: Insperation for text layout

I have taken interest in this magazine because of the text direction and layout which makes the magazine look more interesting and more eye catching.

I also like the way the text is around the image of the artist so only small parts of the artist are covered and you can still see the text.

Research and Planning: Week Plan

This week I plan on starting my music magazine and starting to get the final model shots so i can finish the first major draft of the music magazine.

I also plan to collect more information on the music magazine that are already on the market for more inspiration.

Research and Planning: Head shots

These are the head test shots for my magazine, I took into consideration lighting and zoom when I was taking my images. I think when I take the images with the real models I will use a different location and use more things that relate to the genre of my magazine.

Research and Planning: Music logos for magazine

These are the already existing logos that will feature in my music magazine.

I have chosen Napster because it is a well know music seller and they always feature in other music magazines.

Clubland will feature in my magazine because it is the biggest dance music logo in the world and is automatically connected to all kinds of dance music.

The Ministry of sound logo will be placed on my front cover as I plan to say the magazine is a brand of Ministry of Sound and that they have paid for the magazine to be made. In doing this I can also link the colour scheme from the Ministry of Sound to the magazine as they use dark blues black and yellow on all of there CD covers.

Research and Planning: Questionnaire results

Research and Planning: Drafts of music magazine

This is the first draft of my college magazine. I have designed it so I could feature a large image and also some sub stories on the cover so it looks as realistic as possible
.

  • I have chosen to place my masthead here because its is at the top of the page and is meant to be the first thing you see when you look at the magazine front cover.

This is a conventional place to put the masthead as other magazines place it in the same place.

I have placed the image of the artist here because I wanted it to take up the most space on the page and it will be easier to move my subtitle and text boxes to fit around the image.

The sub-story boxes are positioned here because they fit around the image of the artist and take up the space that left after placing the image.

Research and planning: Content page analysis

This is an example of a music magazine content page. it has all the conventions of a content page :

The colour scheme is consistent and interesting making it it easier to follow and easy to see.

The images fit in with the magazine and relate to what in featured in the magazine

The content page has information on it that is important to the magazine under the page headlines so it gives you a better idea of what the pages are featuring in this weeks edition.

The only thing I don't like is the basic use of font on the page

I like this content page because it has many different images and an interesting layout.

Research and planning: Podcast

Research and Planning: Possible mastheads

These are the possible masthead fonts I will use for my music magazine.

I have narrowed it down to these five fonts as they seem to relate to the genre of my magazine.

I have chosen these font style because they are visually effective and fit in with the genre of my music magazine.

The font at the top of the page is the least dramatic and is very simple, but the design of the font it interesting and very bold.

The second font on the list is the most visually dynamic as it actually ties in with music, as the vibration illustration as if it was surging through the letter.

The third font on the list is very simple but is eye catching at the same time because of the switch between upper and lower case lettering. The font width also changes making it look bolder and wider in some places then others.

The fourth font on the page looks like it has been spray painted onto a piece of paper. The fonts seem to bleed into each other making the letters connect. This is a good connection to music as most music producers use a spray paint style to make a logo or brand.

The last font on the page doesn't connect to music very well but the style of the font makes it interesting to look at. The crack effect covering the font makes it look like someone has smashed the font up.

After looking at these font I have established that these fonts could be used for different genres of music for example, indie, dance and rock.

Research and Planning: Double page spread analysis

This is a double page spread from the music magazine "Q" music magazine.

The page on the left is just and image of two of the band members
and the page on the right page there is an image of the other band member and the the text is under it.

This is a double page spread from the music magazine "Q" music magazine and it features the indie band "Friendly Fires".

I think that "Friendly Fires target audience is both males and females aged between 16-35 years old as the band may have music that all these ages will listen too.

The band represent them selves as an indie band in the way that they dress and there appearance. You can see the genre of music is indie rock because of the way they are dressed, they are dressed very casual. You can also tell see that they are an indie band by the way their hair is styles and the way they have a stereotypical look of a student to make themselves seem more like their audiences.

The page on the left is just an image of two of the band members and the page on the right page there is an image of the other band member and the text is under it. This could mean that the band member on the right, might be the lead singer and shows he is the most important as he is one his own on the other side of the page.

The story on the pages starts with telling the reader what the band has been nominated for and how they have achieved this. The article describes them as having a "Beatles moment" making the band seem more important and iconic to its audiences. The article also says the bands music has a colourful mix of "disco, punk funk, minimal techno and samba rhythms." This gives the reader the full genre of the band and what musical properties they use.

Research and Planning: Music Magazine Analysis

This is the dance music magazine rewind, you can tell that it is a dance music magazine by the way that :-

  • The Masthead is colourful and interesting to look at and it good to look at. It also uses slang RWD is short for rewind and looks like it is for people who are speak slang or understand it.
  • The colour of the magazine look like they would fit the style of music that is being used on a club music CD of poster. and it is also very colourful to look at and is very eye catching.
  • The image on the magazine cover is also interesting because it is informing the reader who is bringing out a new song and giving you a clue to what the song is going to be about the magazine.
  • The magazine also shows the reader that it is a dance craze special in which a dance music artist is named and also featured.

Research and Planning: Preliminary Task and Evaluation

This is my finished college magazine. i made the magazine in Photo shop, i started by placing my image onto a black background and then started looking for more images that would normally go onto a college magazine like a title that would be good and that would fit in with the college name. i picked the Hyde Clarendon College logo and then typed in "magazine" to make it the "Hyde Clarendon college magazine". I like the title because it is a mix of the college name and other media. if i could change it i would change the position of the title to make it more eye catching and also put a boarder behind it to make it look more interesting and make it a bit easier to read as the word "Clarendon" is the same colour as the background

I placed a bar code on the magazine to make it look like a convectional magazine. I then began positioning shapes text and images around the magazine so everything would fit on and not look like there was too much space to be filled in.

I picked this colour scheme because it is simple but affective to use on any magazine.

I like the magazine because it looks like a college magazine and has all the information on it to make it look like a official college magazine i also like the picture and the way the fonts and text boxes are placed as it look more professional and

Research and Planning: Shot Research

I started looking at the different types of shots that can be done with the camera

This is an example of a close up and I will use this in on my magazine cover

This is an example of a mid shot and I will use this in my content page

This is an example of a long shot and I will use this in my double page spread

Research and Planning: Imaginary fonts

These are the font I have drawn. I think the fonts I have designed are related to the words. The popcorn one is simple but is related to the word because it has small pieces of popcorn flying out of it. The pop world font I have designed was the most difficult to design as I could not think o any good ideas.

Research and Planning: Research into Semeiotics

Semeiotics is a process in media that mean studying signs so a person can reads into the type of font and style of font to determine what style or genre the magazine you are reading is going to be and make them able to read more into a magazine just by looking at images and text. people do this by:

  • colour of font
  • style of font
  • background colour
  • shapes and areas around textimgres.jpg You can use semeiotics to determine what style of magazine this is. firstly you notice the bright colours and how they look very dynamic, you then look at the fonts used and what colour they are. you then see the image of the people on the front and see what they are wearing and it is obvious that they this is a music magazine about a raping group

Research and Planning: Draft of college magazine

This is the first draft of my college magazine and the design. I have used a very basic outline so i know where i am going to place things on the cover of my college magazine. I have placed the masthead at the top and will probably make the title bigger so it looks more eye catching to the viewer of the magazine.

the draft shows how many sub stories I will include on the magazine and also where the main story is going to go on the magazine. It also include the bar code, issue number and date on the magazine so the reader know when the magazine was published.
I have also included a competition to make it more appealing to people who want to win prizes.

Research and Planning: Target audience for college magazine

My college magazine will be targeted at students aged 16-19 this is because people in college are around this age. This magazine will be for a range of different colours so it reaches both male and female students. The college magazine will include a lot of peoples interests like music film and sports so it will reach a large range of different students.

The college magazine will be for all students doing GCSE's, A levels and other classes and would include up coming classes and Enrichments that will be available to them in the weeks that they are in college it may also include information on clubs that might be running that they maybe interested on joining. This magazine will be targeted at the working class because thats the type of student at this college

Research and Planning: examples in medium close-up

These are medium close-up shots you can tell this by the way the camera has captured the character. I now understand what shot I have to use for my college magazine.

Research and Planning: analysis of college magazine

This is a typical college magazine, you can tell this by:
    • The masthead font is simple and not to adventures
    • The main image is of a person holding some books
    • The magazine has stories scattered around it that relate to students around that age
    • It has a bar code, date and issue number on the bottom left corner
    • The colour scheme is very basic and repetitive
    • There is a small paint splatter on the page making the magazine seem more childish
    • The slug line is in smaller font above the masthead of the magazine (Your experience to everything hip, hot & happening)
    • The different fonts used on the magazine make it appeal to a younger audience

    Research and Planning: Indesign Tutorial

This was my first attempt at making a film review and I made this on the program indesign which is a program I have never used before. I think it is easy to use and for my first attempt I did well.

I started by making the columns so I could structure the text in the correct place so it looked more realistic. I then to make the title for the page. I placed a text box in the area I wanted to make the text and typed in the title of the film so if a person was reading it they can see what film the review is about. I changed the colour of the background using the shape tool then changed the colour of the font to make the text and image stand out more. I place my image on the page by clicking on the place item in the file option. Then change the size of the image to fit the A4 page. Finally I made a white frame to go around the text an the image to make the page look a bit more interesting.

One thing I did struggle with is the gradient tool as it would not seem to work on my page. If I could change something or do something different I would add some more colour to the page to make it a bit brighter and a bit more eye catching.

Research and planning: Introduction to photoshop (Skin correction tutorial)

For this part of the introduction to photoshop I had to air brush this image to make her look like she had more make up on. First I started with with the spot healing tool to make the woman's skin clearer. Then I wet on to the make-up. First I started  by adding eyeliner to the image to give the eyes more definition and I did this with the paint brush tool. After that I began putting some blue eye shadow on using the paint brush again just at a bigger size and using less opacity so it looked like a blue glitter effect. Also I thought it might be a good idea to make the woman hair slightly lighter blonde to add to the glamorous look and feel to the image, I did this by selecting the dodge tool and turn the opacity down and began lighting small areas of the woman's hair. After I had done with the make-up I started the cut out the background so I could change the colour from pink to blue. I used the magnetic lasso tool so I could cut around the woman and the fill the colour in using to paint bucket tool to change the colour to blue.

Research and planning: Introduction to photoshop (Creating a document)

This was the photoshop challenge in this lesson we had an image of a girl that we had to air brush using the different tools in photoshop. We started by using the spot healing tool to get rid of all the spots on the girls face.I then used the magic wand to select sections of her hair and brighten the colour to make it look like the girl had highlights.I then began adding make-up such as lipstick and eyeliner and adding more eye lashes.

The background was the easiest part of the image to do.I selected the the background layer and the clicked on the paint bucket tool and changed the colour to blue.I then made a frame around the girl by selecting to shape tool and the filling the inside in using the paint bucket tool.I then went on to insert the font.I selected the font tool and placed the font box just above the image then I typed the (AS Media Studies), then I selected the text and changed the font to gothic and changed the colour to red.

Research and planning: Introduction to photoshop (CD cover)

This is the introduction photoshop and we started by changing different images into one single CD cover. I have managed to change all the images to one as I have used photoshop before. I managed to change the colour of the small CD and also make the music instrument a brighter colour so it looked brighter.
I also learned to change images opacity and give things a backing glow effect I have also distorted the background of the CD cover using the smudge tool.

as I have used photoshop before I had tried to make the trumpet a full image as the the top left of the image was cut off and i have tried to replace and blend the edge and the colour with the rest of the trumpet. In this lesson i refreshed my memory on how to use photoshop and learn where everything is on the system.
